Government College, Chittur, established on 11th August 1947, was temporarily housed at the Government Victoria girls’ high school at Chittur in the beginning. It started functioning in the present forty acre campus on the bank of serene Sokanasini in 1954. Chittur, the place that finds place in Kottaratthil Sankunny’s Aithihya Mala while describing the legend of Konggan Pada, was a part of the erstwhile Cochin state. Another legend that is heard about Chittur is associated with Thunchath Ezhuthachan; the father of Malayalam. It is believed that the samadhi of Ezhuthachan was at Chittur and at the place where it is said to have happened, the narayam (pen) and paadukam (shoe) of Ezhuthachan are being worshipped even now.
